6-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Trek

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro via the scenic Machame Route on this 6-day trek. Experience stunning landscapes, excellent acclimatization, and reach Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point.

Tour Overview

The 6-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Trek is one of the most scenic and adventurous ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet). Known as the “Whiskey Route,” the Machame Route takes you through diverse landscapes, from lush rainforest and moorland to alpine desert and the spectacular glacial summit zone.

This 6-day Kilimanjaro climbing itinerary is ideal for adventurous trekkers looking for a challenging route with breathtaking scenery. The trail follows a gradual ascent through several distinct ecological zones and includes the famous Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and Karanga Valley before the final push to Uhuru Peak.

Your trek begins at Machame Gate and passes through the beautiful Kilimanjaro rainforest before continuing toward Shira Plateau. As you climb higher, you will experience dramatic volcanic landscapes and panoramic views of the mountain. The route uses the important “climb high, sleep low” principle, helping your body adjust to the increasing altitude.

After reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, you will descend through the Mweka Route, enjoying a completely different landscape on your way back to the mountain’s lower slopes.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate – Machame Camp

Elevation: 1,800 m to 3,000 m
Distance: Approximately 11 km
Trekking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins after breakfast with a transfer to Machame Gate, where you will complete registration and meet your mountain crew. From the gate, the trek begins through the lush tropical rainforest, where you may encounter colourful birds, monkeys, and a variety of tropical vegetation.

The trail gradually winds uphill through dense forest before reaching Machame Camp, where you will spend your first night on the mountain. Your crew will have prepared your camp, allowing you to relax, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the next day’s trek.

Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp

Elevation: 3,000 m to 3,840 m
Distance: Approximately 9 km
Trekking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland

After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and continue climbing toward the Shira Plateau. The vegetation becomes shorter and more open as you enter the moorland zone, with giant heather plants and expansive mountain scenery.

The trail offers beautiful views of Mount Meru and the surrounding landscapes. As you approach Shira Camp, you will begin to appreciate the dramatic volcanic environment of Kilimanjaro.

At camp, enjoy a warm meal and relax as your body begins adjusting to the increasing altitude.

Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,840 m to 4,630 m to 3,960 m
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Trekking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert

Today’s trek is an important acclimatization day. You will climb gradually toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630 metres above sea level. This “climb high, sleep low” approach gives your body valuable time to adapt to the altitude.

After spending some time around Lava Tower, the trail descends toward the beautiful Barranco Valley. Along the way, you will encounter spectacular volcanic landscapes and views of the massive Barranco Wall.

You arrive at Barranco Camp, surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. The evening provides an excellent opportunity to rest and prepare for the challenging trek ahead.

Habitat: Alpine Desert

After breakfast, you begin the exciting climb up the famous Barranco Wall. Although the wall looks intimidating from the camp, the route is manageable with the help of your experienced mountain guides.

Once at the top, you will be rewarded with magnificent views of Kilimanjaro’s rugged landscape. The trail then continues across valleys and ridges toward Karanga Camp.

This shorter trekking day allows you to rest and acclimatize before the final approach to the summit.

Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,035 m to 4,640 m to 5,895 m, then down to 3,100 m
Distance: Approximately 17 km
Trekking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert & Arctic Zone

Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro trek.

After breakfast, you trek toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit. After an early lunch and a short rest, you prepare for the summit attempt.

You will begin your summit ascent around midnight or in the early hours of the morning. The climb is slow and steady through the darkness, with your headlamp lighting the trail ahead.

After several hours of climbing, you reach Stella Point on the crater rim. From here, you continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres.

Standing at Uhuru Peak is an unforgettable achievement. Celebrate your success, take photographs, and enjoy the breathtaking views before beginning your descent.

You descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp, where you will spend the night.
