Kilimanjaro Trekking Routes

Choosing the right route is one of the most important decisions when planning your Kilimanjaro climb. Each route offers a different experience in terms of scenery, duration, difficulty, accommodation, traffic, and acclimatization opportunities.

Nyakati Adventures can help you select the route that best matches your experience, fitness level, travel dates, and preferences.

Machame Route

Known as the “Whiskey Route,” the Machame Route is one of the most popular approaches to Mount Kilimanjaro.

The route offers spectacular scenery and excellent opportunities for acclimatization through its “climb high, sleep low” approach. Trekkers pass through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and dramatic volcanic landscapes before making their final ascent toward Uhuru Peak.

Best for: Adventurous trekkers seeking beautiful scenery and a challenging experience.

Recommended duration: 6–7 days

Marangu Route

Often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route offering accommodation in mountain huts rather than tents.

The route follows a gradual trail through rainforest and moorland before reaching the high-altitude areas of the mountain.

Best for: Trekkers who prefer hut accommodation and a straightforward trail.

Recommended duration: 5–6 days

Lemosho Route

The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as one of the most scenic approaches to Mount Kilimanjaro. Beginning on the western side of the mountain, the route provides a quieter start and allows trekkers to experience diverse landscapes before joining the southern circuit.

Its longer itineraries provide valuable time for acclimatization.

Best for: Travelers seeking beautiful scenery, a quieter beginning, and a longer acclimatization schedule.

Recommended duration: 7–8 days

Rongai Route

The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the northeastern side of the mountain, close to the border with Kenya.

It is known for its remote atmosphere and relatively dry conditions, making it an attractive option during wetter periods.

Best for: Trekkers looking for a quieter and more remote experience.

Recommended duration: 6–7 days

Northern Circuit Route

The Northern Circuit is the longest route on Kilimanjaro and offers an excellent opportunity for gradual acclimatization.

The route circles around the quieter northern slopes of the mountain, providing spectacular scenery and a more remote trekking experience.

Best for: Trekkers with more time who want a longer itinerary and excellent acclimatization opportunities.

Recommended duration: 8–10 days
