Climb Mount Kilimanjaro via the scenic 7-day Lemosho Route. Enjoy excellent acclimatization, stunning landscapes, and a guided trek to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point.
The 7-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Trek is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Starting from the remote western side of the mountain, the Lemosho Route takes you through lush rainforest, open moorlands, dramatic alpine landscapes, and the high-altitude desert before reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak.
This 7-day itinerary is carefully designed to provide a gradual ascent and a good balance between trekking distances and acclimatization. The route joins the Machame Route at Shira Plateau before continuing toward Lava Tower, Barranco, Karanga, and Barafu Camp. Summit night begins around midnight, leading you to Stella Point and finally Uhuru Peak, where you can celebrate reaching the Roof of Africa.
With experienced mountain guides, a dedicated support crew, and carefully planned daily stages, the 7-Day Lemosho Route is an excellent choice for adventurous travelers looking for a scenic and challenging Kilimanjaro climbing experience.
Elevation: 2,100m to 2,780m
Distance: Approximately 6 km
Trekking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a drive from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi to the Lemosho Gate. After completing registration and park formalities, you will begin your trek through the beautiful montane rainforest.
The trail is surrounded by lush vegetation, ancient trees, and the sounds of tropical birds. Your first day is relatively short, allowing your body to begin adapting to the altitude.
You will arrive at Big Tree Camp, where your mountain crew will have prepared your campsite. Enjoy dinner and your first night on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Elevation: 2,780m to 3,505m
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Rainforest to Moorland
After breakfast, you will leave the rainforest behind and gradually ascend toward the open moorland zone. The landscape changes dramatically as dense vegetation gives way to heather, giant lobelias, and expansive mountain scenery.
As you climb higher, you may enjoy your first impressive views of the surrounding landscape and, depending on weather conditions, glimpses of Kibo Peak.
You will arrive at Shira 1 Camp, located on the western side of the Shira Plateau, where you will enjoy dinner and rest for the night.
Elevation: 3,505m to 4,200m
Distance: Approximately 11 km
Trekking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland to Alpine Desert
Today’s trek takes you deeper into the high-altitude environment of Mount Kilimanjaro. You will cross the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of the most beautiful sections of the route, with wide-open views of Kibo and the surrounding volcanic landscape.
The trail gradually climbs toward Moir Hut Camp, a quieter and more remote campsite located on the northern side of Kibo. This section provides valuable acclimatization as you gain elevation while allowing your body time to adjust.
Enjoy the dramatic scenery before settling into camp for dinner and overnight rest.
Elevation: 4,200m to 4,630m to 3,960m
Distance: Approximately 12 km
Trekking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today is an important acclimatization day. You will climb toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630 meters above sea level. This is a challenging section of the trek, but it plays an important role in helping your body adapt to the increasing altitude.
After spending time around Lava Tower, you will descend toward Barranco Camp. This descent follows the principle of “climb high, sleep low,” giving your body valuable exposure to higher altitude before sleeping at a lower elevation.
The trail offers spectacular views of the Western Breach and the imposing Barranco Wall. Arriving at Barranco Camp in the afternoon, you will enjoy dinner surrounded by some of Kilimanjaro’s most dramatic scenery.
Elevation: 3,960m to 4,035m
Distance: Approximately 7 km
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, you will begin the exciting climb up the famous Barranco Wall. Although the wall looks intimidating from camp, the trail is manageable with the help of your experienced mountain guide.
After reaching the top, you will continue across a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp. The relatively short trekking distance gives you time to rest and prepare mentally and physically for the summit push.
Once at camp, enjoy your final afternoon of acclimatization before dinner and an early night’s rest.
Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m
Distance: Approximately 6 km
Trekking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today’s trek takes you to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you enter the high alpine desert zone.
After arriving at Barafu Camp, you will have an early dinner and receive a briefing from your guide about the summit attempt. Prepare your summit clothing, water, snacks, and essential equipment before getting some rest.
You will go to bed early because the summit climb begins around midnight.
Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m to 3,080m
Distance: Approximately 15–17 km
Trekking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic to Alpine Desert to Rainforest
The most challenging and rewarding day begins around midnight. You will start your summit ascent under the stars, slowly climbing toward Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim.
The ascent is physically demanding, and your guide will encourage you to maintain a slow and steady pace. After reaching Stella Point, you will continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.
Standing at Uhuru Peak is an unforgettable achievement. Take time to celebrate, capture photographs, and enjoy the incredible sense of accomplishment.
After your summit experience, you will begin your descent toward Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp through the alpine desert and moorland zones.
At Mweka Camp, enjoy a well-deserved dinner and celebrate your successful summit.
Note: The 7-day Lemosho itinerary typically requires an additional descent day to complete the trek to Mweka Gate and transfer back to your hotel. For a standard 7-day mountain itinerary, the summit day and descent can be structured according to the group’s pace and park regulations.
