Conquer Mount Kilimanjaro on a 7-day Machame Route trek. Experience stunning landscapes, scenic camps, acclimatization, and reach Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point.
The 7-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Trek is one of the most scenic and popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Often called the “Whiskey Route,” the Machame Route takes you through diverse landscapes, from lush rainforest and moorland to alpine desert and the spectacular glaciers of the summit zone.
This 7-day itinerary is designed to provide a gradual ascent and a good balance between trekking and acclimatization. You will cross the Shira Plateau, hike beneath the Southern Icefields, tackle the challenging Barranco Wall, and make your summit attempt from Barafu Camp.
The ultimate goal is Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft), the highest point in Africa. After reaching the summit, you descend through the Mweka Route, completing an unforgettable Mount Kilimanjaro adventure.
Elevation: 1,800 m to 3,000 m
Trekking Time: 5–7 hours
Distance: Approximately 11 km
Habitat: Montane Forest
After breakfast, you will drive to Machame Gate, where you will complete registration and meet your mountain crew. The trek begins through the lush rainforest, with the trail gradually ascending toward Machame Camp.
Enjoy the beautiful forest scenery and listen for the sounds of birds and monkeys as you make your way through the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Elevation: 3,000 m to 3,845 m
Trekking Time: 4–6 hours
Distance: Approximately 5 km
Habitat: Moorland
After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and climb through the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper as you approach the Shira Plateau, where you will enjoy impressive views of Kibo Peak.
This is an important acclimatization day as your body begins adapting to the increasing altitude.
Elevation: 3,845 m → 4,630 m → 3,960 m
Trekking Time: 6–8 hours
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Habitat: Semi-Desert
Today is one of the most important acclimatization days of the trek. You ascend toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630 m before descending to Barranco Camp.
The “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adjust to the altitude. You will also enjoy spectacular views of the volcanic landscape and the impressive Barranco Valley.
Elevation: 3,960 m to 4,035 m
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: Approximately 5 km
Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, you begin the exciting ascent of the Barranco Wall. Although the wall looks intimidating from below, the climb is manageable with the help of your experienced guides.
Once at the top, enjoy magnificent views before continuing across a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp.
Elevation: 4,035 m to 4,640 m
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: Approximately 4 km
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today you trek toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you enter the high-altitude alpine desert.
Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, your guides will provide a summit briefing. You will have an early dinner and rest as much as possible before beginning your summit climb around midnight.
Elevation: 4,640 m → 5,895 m → 3,080 m
Trekking Time: 12–15 hours
Distance: Approximately 17 km
Habitat: Arctic / Alpine Desert
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
You will begin your summit attempt during the night, climbing slowly toward Stella Point (5,739 m) on the crater rim. From there, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
At the summit, celebrate your achievement and enjoy breathtaking views across the surrounding landscape before beginning your descent.
You will return to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down toward Mweka Camp.
Elevation: 3,080 m to 1,640 m
Trekking Time: 3–4 hours
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Habitat: Montane Forest
After breakfast, your final descent takes you through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. Once you arrive, you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your summit certificate.
Your vehicle will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi, or to the airport for your onward journey.
