8-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Trek

Experience an unforgettable 8-day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro trek with gradual acclimatization, stunning landscapes, expert guides, and a successful summit attempt on Africa’s highest mountain.

Tour Overview

The 8-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Trek is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting from the remote western side of the mountain, the Lemosho Route offers spectacular wilderness scenery, diverse landscapes, and excellent opportunities for acclimatization.

Over eight days, you will trek through lush montane rainforest, open moorlands, the dramatic Shira Plateau, alpine desert, and finally the glacial summit zone. The extended itinerary allows for a slower pace and an additional acclimatization day, increasing your chances of adapting well to the altitude before the demanding summit climb.

With the support of an experienced mountain crew, you will make your way toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft), the highest point in Africa. After reaching the summit, you will descend through the scenic southern slopes of Kilimanjaro, completing an incredible journey through one of the world’s most iconic mountain environments.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp

Elevation: 2,100 m to 2,780 m
Trekking Time: 3–4 hours

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a drive from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi to Londorossi Gate for registration and park formalities. You will then continue toward the Lemosho trailhead before beginning your trek through the beautiful montane rainforest.

The trail is surrounded by lush vegetation and the sounds of forest wildlife. After a relatively short trek, you will arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, where you will enjoy dinner and spend your first night on the mountain.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp – Shira 1 Camp

Elevation: 2,780 m to 3,505 m
Trekking Time: 5–6 hours

After breakfast, you will leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. The vegetation gradually becomes shorter and more open as you climb toward the spectacular Shira Plateau.

Today’s trek offers beautiful views across the surrounding landscapes and toward the higher slopes of Kilimanjaro. You will arrive at Shira 1 Camp in the afternoon and have time to rest and acclimatize.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp – Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 3,505 m to 3,840 m
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours

Today is a relatively gentle trekking day designed to help your body adapt to the increasing altitude. You will cross the expansive Shira Plateau, one of the most beautiful sections of the Lemosho Route.

The trail offers panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s dramatic volcanic landscape. You will continue toward Shira 2 Camp, where you will spend the night surrounded by the breathtaking high-altitude scenery.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,840 m to 4,630 m to 3,960 m
Trekking Time: 7–8 hours

Today is an important acclimatization day as you trek higher toward Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adjust to the altitude.

The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as you enter the alpine desert zone. After reaching Lava Tower, you will descend toward the beautiful Barranco Valley. The towering Barranco Wall creates an impressive backdrop as you approach camp.

Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,960 m to 4,035 m
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours

After breakfast, you will tackle the famous Barranco Wall. Although it looks challenging from below, the climb is manageable with the help of your experienced guides.

At the top, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers and the surrounding valleys. You will then cross a series of ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp.

The shorter trekking distance gives you valuable time to rest and prepare for the final stages of your climb.

Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

Elevation: 4,035 m to 4,640 m
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours

Today’s trek takes you through the stark alpine desert toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your summit attempt.

After arriving at camp, your guides will provide a briefing about the summit climb. You will have an early dinner and rest as much as possible because you will wake around midnight for the final ascent.

Day 7: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,640 m to 5,895 m to 3,080 m
Trekking Time: 12–15 hours

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro adventure. You will wake around midnight and begin your summit ascent in darkness, climbing slowly by headlamp through the cold and steep terrain.

After several hours, you will reach Stella Point (5,739 m) on the crater rim. From here, you will continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa.

Standing at the summit, you will have time to celebrate your achievement and take photographs before beginning your descent. You will return to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.

Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Arusha or Moshi

Elevation: 3,080 m to 1,640 m
Trekking Time: 3–4 hours

After breakfast, you will begin your final descent through the lush rainforest. The trail becomes greener and more humid as you lose altitude.

Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you will complete the park exit formalities and receive your summit certificates. You will then meet your driver and transfer to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi, marking the end of your unforgettable Mount Kilimanjaro adventure.
